DARO (Dec 30): Semop assemblyman Datuk Abdullah Saidol has urged Pulau Bruit residents, especially schoolchildren, to exercise caution along riverbanks following an increase crocodile sightings in the area.
His warning came after 14-year-old Agustine Fernando Nyalong went missing last Friday after a crocodile dragged him into the river while he and four friends were shrimp netting.
Abdullah called on all residents, especially students on school holidays, to remain alert, as many have observed crocodiles hunting between Daro, Serdeng and nearby areas.
The Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department on Sunday visited the victim’s family and the ongoing search-and-rescue (SAR) operation team at Rumah Jingga.
He emphasised that the riverside areas are a key source of livelihood for Pulau Bruit residents, many of whom depend on fishing, and highlighted the need for safety measures.
He also recommended expediting plans to erect warning signboards in crocodile-prone zones and conducting surveys on crocodile sightings to implement effective management strategies.
Meanwhile, Tanjong Manis MP Datuk Yusuf Abdul Wahab advised residents to avoid high-risk riverbank areas, not to let children play near the water, and to always ensure someone is nearby when venturing close to the river.
“We cannot control the number of crocodiles, but we can control our actions. Stay vigilant, avoid areas frequented by crocodiles, and never go alone,” he said.
