MIRI (Sept 7): Curtin University Malaysia inked two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and Solar Borneo Sdn Bhd (Solarvest Borneo) as the International Conference on Energy and Transition and Exhibition (ICETE) 2024 concluded today.

The MoUs focus on academic research in renewable energy, with plans for workshops, conferences and seminars.

They will also facilitate exchange programmes for researchers, students and professionals to share knowledge and expertise, along with offer scholarships and employment opportunities for Curtin alumni.

Curtin University Malaysia’s Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Professor Vincent Lee in his remarks hailed the MoUs as the start of a dynamic collaboration.

“This partnership will encompass a wide range of initiatives, including academic research, knowledge sharing and joint events. The dedication of our collaborators in energy transition and sustainability aligns with our core values and I am confident we will make significant strides towards a more sustainable and prosperous future for Sarawak,” he said.

He added the conference explored critical themes such as renewable energy, clean transitional energy, waste energy recovery, automation, energy systems and energy policies.

“These discussions have deepened understanding and reinforced the essential role of research and innovation in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dato Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, who officiated the ICETE closing ceremony, commended Curtin University Malaysia’s Energy Engineering Programme for preparing the next generation of engineers in meeting the challenges of the evolving energy landscape.

“The programme equips young aspirants with the skills and knowledge needed to drive the innovations in renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable development that we have discussed during this conference.

“By fostering such talent and expertise locally, Curtin University Malaysia plays a critical role in ensuring Sarawak remains at the forefront of the global energy transition,” he said in his closing remarks.
