KUCHING (March 15): The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak has raised several issues related to transportation and local infrastructure with the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
CVLB Sarawak chairman Michael Kong said overloaded heavy vehicles passing through residential areas were among the issues highlighted.
“Local councils need to erect clear weight-limit restriction signage at appropriate locations within residential zones.
“Such signage is important to enable the relevant enforcement agencies, including the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak, to take the necessary enforcement action when violations occur,” he said in a statement on Friday after paying a courtesy call on MPP chairman Tan Kai.
Kong said the meeting also touched on the issue of indiscriminate parking in residential areas.
According to him, enforcement in local housing areas largely falls under the jurisdiction of the respective local council, while JPJ Sarawak’s powers in such areas are limited.
He therefore urged MPP to take more proactive steps to address the issue, which has been causing inconvenience and raising safety concerns.
“We also raised the matter of spillage of loads from lorries following numerous complaints from the public.
“During the discussion, we clarified that CVLB Sarawak’s role is limited to ensuring that lorries properly cover their loads during transportation,” he said.
Kong also disclosed that the board was looking into adjusting some bus routes to better serve the public, stressing that adequate and safe infrastructure was crucial to encourage more people to use public transport.
In this regard, he called upon MPP to consider repairing and upgrading these facilities where necessary.
“We also suggested that MPP, if unable to undertake the works due to financial constraints, provide CVLB Sarawak with the necessary consent to carry out improvements ourselves, whether through securing funding or exploring public-private partnership initiatives,” he said.
Kong added that the board looked forward to continued cooperation with MPP in addressing these issues and improving the transportation conditions and public infrastructure for the benefit of the community.
