KUCHING (March 4): Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak has called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take more proactive and transparent measures to assist a group of Malaysians reportedly stranded in Oman amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Soo Tien Ren, special assistant to DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, said the party had received appeals from several Malaysians affected by flight disruptions following ongoing military conflicts in parts of the region.

He said the stranded individuals claimed their luggage had not arrived and that they were facing shortages of daily necessities, compounding their physical and mental stress.

“According to those involved, they have sought assistance from the Malaysian Embassy in Oman.

“The embassy responded that it is closely monitoring the regional situation and maintaining contact with airlines. Any evacuation arrangements require approval from Putrajaya. At present, the authorities emphasise that the safety of Malaysians is the top priority,” he said in a statement.

Soo acknowledged the coordination challenges faced by the ministry in managing the complex and evolving situation.

“However, under the shadow of ongoing conflict and with restricted regional flight routes, the anxiety and practical difficulties faced by stranded Malaysians cannot be ignored,” he said.

He noted that while Omani airspace remains open, flights towards Qatar involve high-risk airspace, and return flight arrangements continue to face obstacles, leaving their journey home uncertain.

In light of the situation, DAP Sarawak urged the ministry to establish a clear timeline and communication mechanism to keep affected Malaysians informed of the latest developments.

“Alternative arrangements, such as chartered flights or transit via a third country, should be explored to prioritise those in urgent need of returning home.

“Measures must also be taken to ensure Malaysians in the area receive basic living support and essential supplies, not just formal visits,” he added.

Soo said DAP Sarawak would continue to monitor developments and relay requests to the relevant agencies to safeguard the safety and dignity of Malaysians abroad.

“We express our concern and solidarity with all Malaysians currently in the Middle East. Amid an unstable international situation, no citizen should feel isolated or abandoned,” said the Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Stampin chief.
