KUCHING, May 6: The iconic Darul Hana Bridge, Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Complex and Satok Suspension Bridge will be illuminated in a striking red glow on May 8 at 7.30pm, in conjunction with International Thalassaemia Day, as part of a citywide awareness initiative led by the Sarawak Thalassaemia Society Kuching.

The symbolic lighting ceremony, supported by several agencies, aims to raise public awareness on thalassaemia, a genetic blood disorder that affects haemoglobin production and leads to anaemia, while encouraging early screening, timely treatment and proper long-term care for patients.

The society said the Darul Hana Bridge will once again be part of the campaign, marking the second consecutive year of its participation, alongside the DUS Complex and Satok Suspension Bridge, all of which will be bathed in red light as a visual reminder of the cause.

The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) was also commended for its continued cooperation in facilitating the use of the Darul Hana Bridge, while the Sarawak Thalassaemia Society expressed appreciation to Grit Event Management for assisting in coordination efforts.

It also thanked the Sarawak Legislative Assembly for its strong support in allowing the DUN building to be included in the awareness campaign.

International Thalassaemia Day, observed annually on May 8, is dedicated to increasing global understanding of the condition and highlighting the challenges faced by patients and their families, while promoting prevention and better care systems.

Since its establishment in 1995, the Sarawak Thalassaemia Society has been actively involved in patient support through counselling, education and advocacy, while working closely with relevant agencies to strengthen awareness efforts across the State.
