KUCHING (Feb 19): Small traders are encouraged to operate in their respective villages and private premises throughout Ramadan, provided they cooperate with authorities to avoid traffic congestion and maintain cleanliness, said Kuching North Datuk Bandar Dato Hilmy Othman.
He explained that the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) is supportive of small-scale traders operating independently in their own areas during the fasting month.
“We allow small traders to operate independently at their respective places. We encourage them to do so in villages and other suitable areas.
“However, we hope that these traders will cooperate with DBKU so that we can avoid traffic congestion,” he said during the opening of the Satok Ramadan Bazaar here, officiated by Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy and Petros) and Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki.
Hilmy added that if DBKU finds privately operated stalls causing road congestion, the council will advise them to relocate.
“We will not stop their business operations, but advise them to slightly move to allow better traffic flow and resolve any congestion issues,” he said.
Hilmy said DBKU has approved 10 Ramadan bazaar permits this year, involving 828 traders at designated sites, in addition to those operating independently.
The Satok Ramadan Bazaar, organised by DBKU, features 108 lots comprising 82 food stalls, 22 beverage stalls and four grilled food stalls.
The bazaar runs daily from 2pm to 7pm from Feb 19 to March 20.
Describing the bazaar as an iconic annual event, Hilmy said it remains one of the most popular Ramadan bazaars among city residents.
“Every year, the Ramadan bazaar is awaited by all city folk. The most iconic and popular among them is the Satok bazaar,” he said, adding that DBKU will also officiate the Semarak Ramadan Bazaar on Feb 20 and the Sukma Ria Ramadan Bazaar on Feb 21.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim said the Ramadan bazaar tradition continues annually to provide opportunities for small traders to earn income during the fasting month.
“This is an opportunity for small traders to make a living during Ramadan. While we celebrate the month, we are also trying to stimulate the small-scale economy.
“Bazaars like this give traders the chance to do business while maintaining our tradition so that Satok remains lively and vibrant,” he said.
He also advised traders to maintain cleanliness at their stalls and ensure the quality of food and beverages sold.
Earlier, Ibrahim and Hilmy presented Ramadan contributions to 20 asnaf recipients under DUN N8 Satok, with funds collected through the DBKU surau management to help ease their financial burden during the fasting month.
