KUCHING (Feb 24): The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) will intensify tuberculosis (TB) prevention awareness and precautionary health measures at Ramadan bazaars and other public hotspots under its jurisdiction following the rise of TB cases in the country.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, who is in charge of DBKU, said the council will disseminate health advisory information to traders and visitors at the bazaars.

“DBKU will step up advisories on this matter, particularly at the Ramadan bazaars set up across the city.

“We will also remind organisers of events involving large crows to take the necessary precautionary measures,” he said, according to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit report.

He was speaking at a press conference held in conjunction with the upcoming state-level Nuzul Al Quran celebration.

Dr Abdul Rahman said with TB being an airborne disease, members of the public are advised to wear face masks when in crowded places and to seek medical attention if they experience prolonged cough even after receiving treatment.

He stressed that although TB is an endemic disease that can occur at any time, precautionary measures must be strengthened if there is an increase in cases to safeguard public health and community well-being.

He also advised individuals experiencing symptoms such as persistent cough despite having sought treatment to immediately undergo health screening to rule out infection and prevent further transmission.
