KUCHING, April 5: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) has issued a stern reminder to the public to refrain from open burning following a recent bush fire incident and the ongoing hot, dry weather, which heightens the risk of fires and poor air quality.

In a statement today, DBKU Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman said the current weather conditions require serious attention from all parties as they could lead to increased fire outbreaks and environmental hazards.

The warning comes in the wake of a bush fire affecting three hectares along Jalan Sultan Tengah, near Bangunan Sumber Alam in Petra Jaya, which was reported around midday yesterday.

Preliminary investigations at the scene found that the fire was likely triggered by the burning of cable rubber by irresponsible individuals, which ignited the surrounding area.

DBKU stressed that all forms of open burning are strictly prohibited and offenders may face legal action.

“Activities such as burning rubbish, garden waste, or open spaces not only pose safety risks but can also affect public health due to haze,” he said.

The public has been advised to avoid open burning for land clearing, waste disposal, or any other purposes, as fires can spread rapidly under the current hot and dry conditions and may become difficult to control.

Among the precautions urged by DBKU are for the public to remain vigilant, especially in fire-prone areas such as grasslands and bush areas, and to use proper waste disposal methods, including DBKU’s garbage collection services.

Residents are also encouraged to limit outdoor activities if temperatures rise excessively or if air quality deteriorates, and to report any fire incidents promptly to the authorities.

DBKU said it is taking the matter seriously and will intensify monitoring and enforcement efforts.

Strict action will be taken against those found violating regulations on open burning under Section 113 of the Local Authorities Ordinance, 1996. — DayakDaily
