KUCHING (Aug 30): Datuk Abdullah Saidol called on Sarawakians to defend the state’s rights and interests as they would protect their own families.
The Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, in conjunction with Malaysia’s 67th National Day celebration, also urged Sarawakians to take pride in being citizens of Malaysia and being part of a nation renowned for its diversity in race, religion and culture.
“Let us come together in unity and determination to safeguard the dignity and sovereignty of Malaysia. United we stand, divided we fall.
“If we walk alone, we may move quickly — but when we move together, our journey and vision extends far,” he said in a video message shared by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS).
He further emphasised the shared responsibility of the current generation in building a better future for society and future generations.
Abdullah noted ‘Jiwa Merdeka’ had been chosen as the theme for the national day celebrations this year, which is deeply rooted in the five principles of the Rukun Negara.
According to him, the theme also reflects the nation’s desire for leaders with a strong sense of patriotism who prioritise the welfare of the country, race and religion.
“It also signifies the people’s aspiration to be free from weak leadership, lack of integrity and destructive political practices. Jiwa Merdeka holds profound meaning, which can be interpreted from various perspectives in our current way of life,” he said.
He further emphasised that for the people, ‘Jiwa’ represents the desire for a peaceful mind and spirit while enjoying a tranquil life while ‘Merdeka’ signifies the aspiration to be free from oppression and the influence of negative elements and sentiments.
He added that while conflicts and human suffering occur in other parts of the world, Malaysians must strive to maintain peace and stability in the country.
