KUCHING (Nov 20): Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, Malaysia Agreement 1963 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali has called for more women’s empowerment programmes to be run.

She says this is also a way to encourage more of them to participate in economic activities.

According to her, half of the nation’s population consists of women and their achievements in various fields cannot be denied.

“Just look at the institutions of higher learning or schools, you can see that many of the top achievers are women.

“The roles played by women in the society are very important, and we must take care of them,” she said this when officiating at the one-day ‘Sarawak Women and Food Symposium’ conducted by Persatuan Masakan dan Kuih Muih Sarawak, at a hotel here yesterday.

Sharifah Hasidah also hoped that more knowledge-based programmes could be carried out for the benefit of the local womenfolk, as well as for promoting good health through healthy diet.

A cake-cutting ceremony was performed to mark the association’s 20th anniversary celebration.

Sharifah Hasidah attended the symposium on behalf of the Sarawak Premier’s wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.

The session involved 170 participants, including those from the Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers of Sarawak (Sabati).

The speakers were from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak Campus.
