KUCHING (March 1): Well wishes are pouring in for Datu Kipli Yassin, the former Mufti of Sarawak who has, for 16 years, made significant contributions to the development of Islamic institutions in the state.

Replacing him is Datu Khalidi Ibrahim, who previously served as a syariah (Islamic law) expert at the Sarawak Mufti Department.

In this respect, Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission [DBKU] and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi expressed gratitude to Kipli for his dedication and service, particularly in strengthening the role of the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) and its agencies.

“As a highly-experienced figure in Islamic affairs, he served as an advisor and a key reference point on matters related to Islam, especially in the issuance of fatwas (decrees),” the Pantai Damai assemblyman told reporters at a ‘bubur pedas’ distribution drive in Kampung Sourabaya Ulu Esplanade BGS on Sunday.

When asked about the conflict in the Middle East, Dr Abdul Rahman advised all Malaysians, including Sarawakians, currently residing in the region to remain vigilant amidst the ongoing tensions involving the US, Israel and Iran, as well as the Gulf countries.

“We pray that the situation would calm down, and that the conflict could be brought to an end as soon as possible,” he said.
