KUCHING, Mar 22: The Sarawak government, through agencies under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development, is identifying high-risk erosion and landslide areas, but collective environmental awareness remains vital in saving the planet, says its deputy minister, Datuk Len Talif Salleh.
Len Talif further explained that Sarawak has an overall policy on addressing climate change, particularly through initiatives pioneered by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He elaborated that Sarawak aims to strengthen the legal framework on the matter, which will ensure that the public fully comprehends their roles in implementing the law, and that it will be adaptable to facilitate its practical application in the field.
However, he said that despite Sarawak’s initiatives in introducing green economy and energy transition, the State is considered a small entity in global efforts, and that it is vital for everyone to be environmentally responsible.
“As global citizens, we must recognise our inherent responsibilities,” he said to reporters at his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house here today.
He underscored the importance of public awareness regarding the impact of climate change on forest ecosystems, specifically emphasising the role of carbon sequestration in mitigating natural erosion and landslides.
“Our forests play a vital role, not only in timber production, but also, and more significantly, in carbon sequestration. They absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen. Moreover, they mitigate surface water erosion by absorbing water from the ground, thereby reducing the incidence of flooding.
“In addition, they also contribute to the reduction of soil erosion and landslides. The dissemination of this information is crucial, addressing both the public and all relevant agencies, whether directly or indirectly involved, to guarantee the effective implementation of the law.
“Therefore, given the current unpredictable weather patterns, individuals must cultivate an environmental mindset to promote a sustainable future,” he said. — DayakDaily
