KUCHING (Nov 2): Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui HIan has called for cooperation between local councils, various agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to accelerate nation-building in Sarawak.
He said effective communication is essential for achieving the state’s development goals by 2030 and ensuring all parties can reach a consensus for the state’s betterment.
“Sarawak is moving forward through unity and hard work and we as Sarawakians come together to work and demonstrate to the rest of Malaysia on how it’s done. Let us set an example for other states to foster unity, so we may all improve and grow together and beware of those who seek to divide our people.
“Let us not forget the critical role of the private sector and NGOs, as their financial and human capital are vital in helping local government achieve its goals, particularly regarding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and addressing climate change,” he said during the Padawan Municipal Council’s (MPP) 28th anniversary dinner here on Friday.
Dr Sim also expressed his ambition for local councils to reach international standards, exemplifying MPP’s efforts to roll out the Green City Action Plan (GCAP) and implement the Child-Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).
“It’s not enough to meet Sarawak’s standards or even international standards. Let’s aim to set the highest international benchmark so Sarawak receives global recognition,” he said.
He also commended MPP for achieving third place in the national Municipality Category of the Local Authority Star Rating Award at the 2024 Local Authority Convention.
“Reaching the top three among all local councils and authorities across Malaysia is no small feat. It demonstrates MPP’s commitment to serving the residents within its jurisdiction,” he said.
On celebrating MPP’s 28th anniversary, Dr Sim noted that the occasion was more than a simple gathering but a tribute to the dedicated work of its people (MPP’s staff and members).
Also present were MPP chairman Tan Kai, Batu Kitang Assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang, Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap and other dignitaries.
