KUCHING, Dec 3: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has urged the Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong Wui Wui to verify information before raising claims in the Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting, stressing that Kuching City Parking Sdn Bhd (KCPS) has not paid any directors’ fees for the past four years.
According to him, KCPS’ financial pressures stemmed largely from parking rates that have remained unchanged for 32 years, since 1993, even as operating and wage costs continue to rise.
“The pandemic further reduced revenue and placed the company under additional strain, prompting the State government to assist KCPS with a 25 per cent rental reduction during that period,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
Dr Sim said enforcement efforts have since been strengthened to stabilise the company’s finances, with local councils and KCPS stepping up demand notices, court actions, a 50 per cent compound discount programme, and Kuching North City Commission’s digital Reformasi Kerenah Birokrasi project reminders, which he said are improving compliance and curbing losses.
“Season parking remains prohibited in high-demand areas, including Carpenter Street, Main Bazaar, and China Street to ensure fair access for the public,” he added.
Dr Sim criticised the Pending assemblywoman for alleging that KCPS directors were still receiving fees, calling the claim misleading.
“As someone from the legal profession, she should have verified the facts,” he stressed.
On traffic management, Dr Sim said DBKU currently has 32 traffic wardens and that 10 more reported for duty on Dec 1, bringing the total to 42. He said the additional manpower is expected to ease congestion and improve traffic flow across the city. — DayakDaily
