KUCHING, June 15: Cleanliness is among the issues that the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) will examine at Batang Lupar Bridge 1, with a report expected to be completed within two weeks, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
This came among reports that Batang Lupar Bridge 1, despite being recently opened, already has rubbish scattered along it, sparking public concern over the condition of the landmark structure.
Speaking to the media during a doorstep interview today, he said that JKR is taking measures to provide facilities to dispose of waste at Batang Lupar Bridge 1.
“We will continue to monitor the place. We want the place to be clean and attractive because during Gawai, someone from Singapore came over and told me they were going to the Batang Lupar bridge.
“We don’t want to project an image that can tarnish Sarawak. So please, this is our property—Sarawakians’ property. So, take care of it so it will remain our pride for years to come.
“For JKR, we will do the necessary steps on how to ensure that cleanliness remains one of the features for Batang Lupar. We are also looking at various other issues. Sometimes they need to be addressed, so JKR is looking into this, and I expect them to give me the report within two weeks,” he said.
As for road safety measures to prevent accidents along the bridge, Uggah advised motorists not to drive too fast and to be courteous and respectful to others.
“We are asking the people to do the same. Don’t drive too fast. This is public property. This is infrastructure that facilitates our movement. So, make sure that we use it as it is. Please drive prudently,” he said.
Other than littering, other issues faced at Batang Lupar Bridge 1 are fishing activities and any form of selling, in which Sarawak JKR issued a reminder prohibiting such activities, citing safety risks and traffic disruption concerns.
This came after images circulated on the social media page Sarawak Roads Update showing individuals allegedly setting up makeshift stalls on the bridge to sell goods. — DayakDaily
