KUCHING (March 18): The Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) initiative reflects the state government’s continued commitment to easing the cost of living, particularly for low-income groups, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

He noted that the programme, introduced under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has had a positive impact since its implementation in 2025.

“In its first year, SKAS benefited over 888,000 recipients with a total allocation of RM480.2 million.

“This year, we have strengthened the programme with a higher allocation to ensure continued support for the rakyat,” he said at the launch of the SKAS programme in Spaoh, Betong.

Uggah, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, said SKAS 2026 has a total allocation of RM640 million and will benefit more than 857,000 recipients statewide, including 50,284 in Betong alone.

He said assistance rates have been increased across all categories: each household will now receive RM950, senior citizens RM500, and single individuals RM300.

The aid is channelled through digital vouchers via the S Pay Global app, allowing recipients to purchase essential food items from registered supermarkets and retailers.

“This approach not only ensures targeted spending on necessities but also supports Sarawak’s aspiration towards a cashless and modern economy,” he said.

Uggah added that the aid will be distributed in three phases — March, May, and November — to provide consistent financial support throughout the year.

Besides helping recipients, SKAS also benefits the local economy by supporting retail businesses and strengthening the domestic economic ecosystem.

In Betong alone, 86 supermarkets and retailers participate in the programme, he said.

He urged community leaders and relevant agencies to ensure that assistance reaches all eligible recipients, including those facing difficulties accessing the digital platform.

Recipient data is based on Phase 1 of the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) programme managed by the Inland Revenue Board.

“Those who believe they are eligible but have not received SKAS are encouraged to contact the Betong Resident’s Office or the Social Welfare Department for further assessment.

“This also supports Sarawak’s move towards a cashless society that is more efficient, secure and modern,” Uggah said.

For bedridden recipients under the care of the Sarawak Social Welfare Department, redemption will be coordinated by divisional welfare offices.

For other eligible recipients facing difficulties redeeming assistance online, family members or community leaders are encouraged to inform the relevant authorities for coordination.

Also present at the launch were Betong MP Datuk Dr Richard Rapu Begri, Beting Maro assemblyman Datuk Razaili Gapor, Krian assemblyman Friday Belik, Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa, Betong Resident Datu Richard Michael Abunawas, Betong District Officer Laga Kueh and community leaders.
