KUCHING, May 31: Malaysian Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato Seri Tiong King Sing, has reminded Gawai revellers to celebrate responsibly, urging those consuming tuak or alcohol not to get behind the wheel during the festive season.
In a Facebook post today, Tiong stressed the importance of prioritising safety while enjoying the festivities, particularly as many Sarawakians travel to their hometowns and longhouses for the annual harvest celebration.
“If you drink tuak or alcohol, drink in moderation and responsibly. Always remember, never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs as it endangers yourself and others,” he said.
He also called on those travelling during the holiday period to comply with traffic regulations and exercise caution on the roads.
“For those returning to their hometowns or travelling to any destination during this festive season, obey traffic rules and drive carefully and prudently. May you all arrive safely at your respective destinations,” he said.
Tiong described Hari Gawai as an important traditional celebration for the Dayak community and a symbol of the cultural diversity that makes Sarawak unique.
He said the festival not only marks the end of the harvest season but also reflects the cultural heritage, customs and values passed down through generations and preserved to this day.
“I hope we will continue to appreciate and preserve this cultural treasure while strengthening the spirit of unity, mutual respect and harmony among all races in order to maintain Sarawak’s uniqueness as a State rich in cultural diversity,” he said.
Separately, Tiong welcomed participants from across Malaysia and overseas to the 5th Sarawak NASH HASH 2026 Fun Run organised by the Sarawak Tropical Rainforest Hash Club.
He thanked international participants for making the journey to Sarawak and encouraged them to take the opportunity to build friendships across borders while experiencing the State’s natural beauty and cultural richness.
Expressing hope that their visit would be more than a one-time trip, Tiong invited visitors to return in the future with their family and friends to explore more of what Sarawak has to offer.
He added that the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) would continue supporting initiatives that combine sports, nature, culture and tourism to help promote Sarawak and Malaysia to the world.
Tiong also extended his Hari Gawai greetings to the Dayak community, wishing them a joyful and meaningful celebration.
