KUCHING, April 5: Fuel supply, including diesel, for Sabah and Sarawak remains sufficient for now, according to national oil company PETRONAS, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof.
He said PETRONAS, which oversees the country’s petroleum production and distribution, has indicated that supply levels are currently stable despite rising global prices and ongoing uncertainties in the energy market.
“PETRONAS manages the overall production and supply, and for now, it has indicated that fuel supply, including diesel, remains sufficient for Sabah and Sarawak,” he told reporters at the Jalinan Kasih Aidilfitri ceremony of Kampung Semariang Batu (KASDA) at the KASDA hall last night (April 4).
Fadillah stated that while fuel prices surge worldwide, Sarawak remains in a strong position, relying less on oil for power due to its shift towards green energy.
“Sarawak should be grateful. Thanks to the foresight of the Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) and past leadership, we have transitioned towards green energy.
“Hydropower alone accounts for about 60 per cent of our energy. We are also moving towards solar, while some generation still uses gas and coal.
“Sarawak is in a relatively comfortable position. Our situation is quite good because we do not rely heavily on oil for power generation,” he explained.
He added that Sabah, however, which relies more heavily on diesel, could see its power supply affected if global prices continue to rise and supply tightens.
“Our focus is to ensure Sabah has sufficient supply for power generation. This is important not only for homes but also for industry and businesses. Reliable energy ensures the economy continues to grow,” he said. — DayakDaily
