KUCHING (Feb 8): The Sarawak government places strong emphasis on the development of the transportation and logistics sector, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He said that the government is fully aware of the challenges faced by operators, including rising operational costs, manpower shortages, safety risks and infrastructure needs.

“The government will continue to work hand in hand with the industry through policy coordination, infrastructure improvements and inter-agency collaboration to achieve balanced and long-term solutions,” he said at the Sarawak Lorries Transport Association’s (SLTA) 42nd anniversary cum pre-Spring Festival dinner held at SJKC Chung Hua No.3 here on Saturday.

Dr Sim emphasised the importance of lorry transportation in Sarawak, given the state’s vast and diverse geographical challenges.

He said the industry connects urban centres with rural areas, narrows development gaps and ensures that economic growth benefits communities more equitably across Sarawak.

He urged transport industry players to evolve with the times by embracing high technology.

“Advancements in digitalisation, safety technology, operational efficiency and environmental sustainability are no longer optional but necessary.

“This is where SLTA can play an important role as a platform to support its members in adapting to change and preparing for future challenges,” he said.

Pointing out that a well-functioning economy depends on an efficient and reliable transportation system, Dr Sim said lorry transportation plays a critical and irreplaceable role.

He added that from urban development and rural connectivity to industrial, agricultural and commercial activities, the transportation of raw materials, distribution of goods and delivery of daily necessities rely heavily on the dedication of lorry operators.

“As we advance our journey of Sarawak nation-building, progress cannot rely solely on the government. It requires unity and collective effort from the people, associations and all sectors of society to ensure that Sarawak continues to progress steadily and inclusively.

“My appreciation goes to all lorry drivers, operators and their families for their unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions to Sarawak’s economy and society,” he added.

Dr Sim noted that the 103-table dinner reflected strong support and unity within the lorry transport industry, as well as the solid foundation built by SLTA over the years.

He said SLTA presentedly has 450 members and has remained steadfast in uniting industry stakeholders, safeguarding members’ interests and promoting professionalism within the sector.

He added that over the years, the association has grown in tandem with Sarawak’s economic and social development.

“This dedication has not only strengthened the association itself, but has also contributed meaningfully to Sarawak’s transportation and logistics landscape.”

He also commended SLTA for its consistent engagement with government agencies and its efforts in voicing industry concerns, noting that this had contributed positively to improving industry standards, safety awareness, and overall service quality.

“May the Year of the Horse bring you success, prosperity, progress in your endeavours and safe journeys ahead,” he concluded.

Among those present were Malaysia Trucking Federation president Datuk Ng Koong Sinn and SLTA president Jong Boon Khong.
