KUCHING, May 27: The Drainage System Upgrading Project at the federal government quarters here, which includes the construction of a one-acre flood detention pond, has achieved 15.81 per cent physical progress and remains on track for full completion by Sept 10, 2027.
In a statement today, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said he was recently given a detailed briefing on the progress of the project under Sarawak Integrated River Basin Development Project (PLSB) Sungai Sarawak Package 2.
“The federally funded project under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) is progressing ahead of schedule, with the latest performance report showing actual physical progress at 15.81 per cent compared to the scheduled target of 15.05 per cent, reflecting a positive variance of 0.76 per cent,” he said.
Yap welcomed the encouraging progress and commended all parties involved for their commitment, close coordination, and dedication in ensuring the successful implementation of the flood mitigation infrastructure project.
He emphasised that the project, valued at nearly RM24 million, forms part of the broader PLSB initiative and is supervised by the Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) as the implementing agency, while Mexajati Sdn Bhd is the main contractor.
“The scope of works includes the construction of a one-acre flood detention pond with a depth of 2.5 metres to manage stormwater overflow, upgrading reinforced concrete drainage systems, and installing modern culvert structures to improve overall water flow and drainage capacity,” he explained.
During the briefing, Yap was informed that several components had already recorded significant progress, including the completion of earth drain works, substantial advancement of the detention pond retaining wall construction, and ongoing installation of anti-climb fencing.
“Additional major drain upgrading works and culvert construction are expected to commence in the next phase of implementation,” he said.
Yap stressed that the project is highly important for residents within the N.12 Kota Sentosa constituency and the P.196 Stampin parliamentary constituency, particularly in strengthening long-term flood mitigation efforts and enhancing drainage infrastructure surrounding the federal government quarters and nearby residential areas.
He also expressed appreciation to PETRA, the Sarawak DID, consultants, contractors, and technical agencies for ensuring the project remains on track while maintaining high standards of workmanship and public safety throughout the construction period.
Yap further reaffirmed his commitment to continue monitoring the implementation progress of infrastructure projects within Kota Sentosa to ensure development initiatives directly benefit the people and improve the quality of life of local communities. — DayakDaily
