KUCHING, June 16: Works to upgrade the deteriorating drainage system in Taman Sri Emas along Jalan Stapok Utama have commenced, with the RM266,530 project expected to be completed by Sept 11 this year.

The drainage upgrading project for the residential area was approved following an application by Batu Kawa assemblyman Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian after residents raised concerns over the ageing and deteriorated drainage infrastructure through the N14 Batu Kawa Service Centre.

According to a statement issued by Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) today, the area’s drainage system had not undergone any major upgrading or improvement for many years, resulting in severe deterioration in many sections and affecting the efficiency of water flow.

Following complaints from residents, the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) conducted site inspections, planning and cost estimation for the proposed works.

Dr Sim, who is also Deputy Premier, subsequently assisted in submitting the application for the project.

The project was later approved under the Malaysian Road Records Information System (MARRIS) programme with a total allocation of RM266,530.

Construction officially began on June 5, 2026, with MPP tasked with overseeing the implementation of the project, including its design, cost estimation, tender process and supervision.

The current phase of construction focuses on upgrading the main drainage channels within the housing estate.

As the existing drains have suffered extensive damage and require complete reconstruction, excavation works involving the entire drainage network are necessary. This may result in temporary inconvenience to residents, particularly with regard to vehicle access and daily movement within the neighbourhood.

Residents have been urged to cooperate and exercise patience throughout the construction period.

The statement also expressed hope that the appointed contractor would complete the project according to schedule so that residents can benefit from a safer, more effective and efficient drainage system at the earliest opportunity. — DayakDaily
