KUCHING, Mar 16: Dudong assemblyman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing urged recipients of the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) to spend wisely and avoid wasteful spending or purchasing unnecessary items.

In a Facebook post, he noted that the Sarawak government had increased the amount of assistance provided to recipients this year and expressed his appreciation to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his commitment to introducing and continuing initiatives that directly benefit the people.

“This initiative clearly demonstrates the Sarawak government’s concern in ensuring that the welfare of the people is always safeguarded, especially in assisting the B40 group who require support in facing the current cost-of-living challenges.

“I hope that recipients will make the best use of the assistance provided to meet their daily basic needs,” he said.

Tiong, who also serves as the federal Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture and Bintulu MP, said during the launch of the SKAS 2026 programme for Dudong on Sunday (Mar 15) that the ceremony reflects an important effort to ensure government assistance is delivered directly to the people, particularly those who need it most.

In the last Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting, it was announced that RM640 million has been allocated under the Sarawak Budget 2026 for SKAS.

Households with an income of RM5,000 and below will see their annual support increased by RM150, from RM800 to RM950.

Senior citizens without partners or children, earning RM5,000 and below, will receive an increase of RM100, from RM400 to RM500.

Single individuals with an income of RM2,500 and below will benefit from an increase of RM50, raising their assistance from RM250 to RM300. — DayakDaily
