KUCHING, 14 Oct: A feasibility study for the construction of a new water treatment plant in Lubok Nibong using the source of water from Krian River is proposed to address disruption of water supply in DUN area Kalaka especially during drought season.
Member of the Kalaka State Legislative Assembly (ADUN), Mohamad Duri said that the proposal was submitted to the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunications (MUT) to find a long-term solution to the problem.
According to him, the disruption of water supply last September affected residents in Kaba, Kali Kaba, Nibong Pit, Perpat and Kampung Paloh when Lichok Water Treatment Plant could not operate optimally due to prolonged drought.
"In this regard, I request that MUT through the Department of Outdoor Water Supply (JBALB) conduct a feasibility study for construction of a water treatment plant in Nibong Pit area using water sources from Krian River.
"This study should cover water resource capacity, implementation costs, population needs and technical aspects to determine the feasibility of the proposal", he said while addressing the Supply Bill (Bill) 2027 at the 19th Sarawak DUN Congress today.
According to him, dry weather conditions cause raw water levels to decrease, thus affecting the process of water intake for treatment and supply to consumers.
In addition, the issue of water supply cannot be addressed by increasing the capacity of treatment plants only, but also requires sufficient raw water resources and a climate-resilient supply system.
