KUCHING, 15 Oct: The Sarawak Government is urged to take stronger and more effective measures to curb synthetic drug abuse as well as online gambling activities that are becoming increasingly troubling in the community.
Royston Valentine, a member of the Tellian State Legislative Assembly (ADUN), said the existence of various synthetic drugs such as 'piu-piu', 'mushroom' and new psychoactive substances (NPS), in addition to online gambling activities requires a new approach that is more realistic and effective.
"Governments and enforcement agencies must take concrete measures to contain the threat, especially in order to protect the youth and welfare of society in Sarawak", he said.
He said this while addressing the Sarawak Budget 2027 at the 19th Sarawak State Assembly (DUN) Conference today.
He said the efforts should include enforcement of online drug and gambling distribution networks, ongoing prevention education and access to treatment and rehabilitation.
"We cannot allow this threat to continue destroying the future of Sarawak's children. The people need clear commitments, coordinated action and convincing results", he said.
Royston said synthetic drug distribution and sale activities now also use social media as a promotional medium as well as public transportation and delivery services such as buses and couriers.
In this regard, he called for stronger action against drug suppliers and distributors, while chargers should be given adequate space and support to undergo the recovery process.
At the same time, he said, education on the dangers of drug abuse should be started earlier in schools through a more proactive approach.
Regarding online gambling, Royston called for strict action to be taken against premises suspected of carrying out such activities including considering the cancellation of business licenses if the premises were used as a venue for illegal gambling.
