KUCHING, Oct 14: The Assek Hill redevelopment project has the potential to transform Sibu's economy towards a modern, sustainable and competitive city as well as improve the quality of life of its population.
Chieng Jin Ek, Member of the National Assembly (ADUN) Bukit Assek said he fully supports implementation of the project covering an area of 820 acres.
"The master plan of the project received final approval from the Sarawak Planning Authority on 28 January 2026, while the Prime Minister of Sarawak last July stated that the redevelopment could bring Sibu towards a new economy based on sustainability and high-value activities", he said.
He said this while discussing Sarawak Budget 2027 at the 19th Sarawak State Assembly (DUN) Conference, today.
According to him, the development not only involves land redevelopment but also includes integrated planning for flood mitigation, paring system, transport, housing, commercial development and green areas to create a more livable urban environment.
Chieng also welcomed the public's welcome to the three-day exhibition of the project as part of Sarawakku Sayang program last July which attracted thousands of visitors.
The second exhibition at Sibu Heritage Centre from 3 to 11 October also gave the residents an opportunity to get more information about the development plan and interact with officials of the Land Development and Protection Board (LCDA).
In this regard, Chieng urged the LCDA to continue its public affairs circle and consider setting up permanent exhibition spaces to allow residents as well as landowners to get up-to-date information, raise concerns and provide feedback.
Commenting on the project's implementation period, Chieng said that the redevelopment of Mount Assek is expected to take at least 15 years as announced by Sarawak Premier.
He urged the government to set a clear implementation phase and timeline, prioritizing urgent infrastructure improvement as well as flood mitigation measures.
"I am confident that the government's continued commitment, transparent communication and participation means that the community is able to make the project a catalyst for Sibu's economic development as well as create a better living environment for future generations", he said.
