KUCHING (Oct 3): Two men were placed on a bond of good behaviour for two years after they pleaded guilty in the Sessions Court here today to possessing sharp weapons in public without a lawful purpose.
Royce Akong, 43, and Chung Chint Choy, 44, made the plea after the charge under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, was read to them before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman.
Section 6(1) provides for a jail term of between five and 10 years, and whipping, upon conviction.
The duo committed the offence next to an eatery in Lorong Matang Jaya, Matang here at around 12.30am on Nov 9, 2023.
Based on the facts of the case, a police team spotted Royce and Chung behaving suspiciously on the road in a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The pair tried to escape but police gave chase and successfully stopped the vehicle next to the eatery.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of four machetes, an axe and a ‘commando’ knife in the back seat.
In addition, a check of the vehicle’s chassis and engine numbers found that it had been reported stolen.
It was informed that both accused have claimed trial in the Magistrates’ Court to a charge of possessing a stolen vehicle.
Prosecuting the case was DPP Iezzah Iburdanisha Ibrahim, while Royce and Chung were represented by counsel Osman Ibrahim.
