KUCHING, April 5: Early measures are crucial as ongoing conflicts in the Middle East threaten global energy supply chains, raising concerns over potential fuel shortages and rising costs that could impact Sarawak and Malaysia.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof said the government must remain prepared as uncertainties continue to unfold.

“Although these conflicts may seem far away, their impact can reach us, including in Sarawak. Disruptions to global energy supply are already affecting fuel, logistics, and the cost of living.

“At present, our reserves remain stable, but if the situation persists, the effects will become more apparent,” he said when speaking at the Jalinan Kasih Aidilfitri ceremony of Kampung Semariang Batu (KASDA) at the KASDA hall last night (April 4).

He noted that fuel shortages and rising costs are already affecting other countries, and Malaysia must be ready for similar impacts.

“That is why early measures are being taken, including encouraging prudent energy use and adjusting fuel policies to extend our reserves,” he said.

Fadillah added that higher fuel prices would inevitably raise transportation and logistics costs, which could in turn push up the prices of goods, particularly imports.

He also emphasised that public cooperation is essential to ensure the effectiveness of government measures, adding that authorities are closely monitoring developments and coordinating efforts at both federal and State levels.

“There is no need to panic. Measures are in place, and the government will continue to monitor the situation closely to safeguard the interests of the people,” he said.

Earlier, he expressed appreciation to the Kampung Semariang Batu community and organisers for successfully hosting the Aidilfitri gathering, praising their strong spirit of unity and cooperation.

He also reminded the public to reflect on the plight of those affected by conflicts abroad, particularly in the Middle East, as Malaysians celebrate Aidilfitri in peace. — DayakDaily
