KOTA KINABALU (Dec 9): The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch held a technical briefing on Tuesday on the Outcome-Based Professional Interview (PI) 2.0.

The session presented by IEM Vice Chairman I, Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, JP,  attracted about 30 participants, including the Chief Assistant Director of the Rural Water Supply Branch, Ts. Abd Halim Ag Marali, and engineers from the Sabah Water Department.

With more than 38 years of engineering experience, Tan provided an in-depth explanation of the modernised assessment structure of PI 2.0. He emphasized that PI 2.0 is not merely an examination, but a platform for engineers to demonstrate real professional competencies, ethical conduct, technical judgment, and responsibility for public safety — core elements that strengthen engineers’ competitiveness and support the professionalisation of the industry.

The briefing also highlighted the background of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), its organisational structure, national and state council members, membership categories, and the various professional benefits available to engineers through IEM, including technical training, knowledge sharing, and career networking opportunities.

In addition, Tan emphasised the essential technical competencies required of water engineers, such as water supply systems, hydraulic design, asset management, non-revenue water (NRW) control, regulatory compliance, and sustainable engineering practices — all fundamental to improving the overall quality of water services in Sabah.

The session concluded with an open Q&A segment, where participants actively raised questions on PI documentation, project selection, and effective methods of demonstrating professional competencies, reflecting a strong interest in professional certification and continuous technical development.

The briefing ended on a positive note, reaffirming IEM Sabah Branch’s commitment to advancing engineering professionalism and supporting the enhancement of technical capacity within Sabah’s water sector.
