KUCHING (Sept 23): The 21st Para Malaysia Games (Para Sukma XXI) still holds the same significance for Chong Cheng Tat, just as it was when he competed in Sukma 2000 in Penang.
Back then, the Kuchingite clinched gold in the hammer throw, and he returned this time as a para-athlete with renewed determination, securing gold in the Men’s F34 shot put with a throw of 6.07m.
The category is for athletes with cerebral palsy, hypertonia, athetosis, or ataxia.
With the win, he becomes the first athlete to win gold in both Sukma and Para Sukma.
Chong was struck down by stroke in 2020, which left him with hemiplegia, affecting the entire left side of his body. Originally left-handed, he was forced to adapt to using his right hand.
Expressing deep satisfaction with his achievement in Para Sukma XXI, he said his win signified his transition from an able-bodied athlete to a para-athlete.
“It took me about a year of preparation to reach this milestone,” the 45-year-old told reporters when met at Sarawak Stadium here today, adding that his love for sports kept him motivated during the challenging transition.
“I put in a lot of effort; it’s not easy, and it’s not something that happened overnight.”
Determined to not let his condition hinder his dreams, Chong emphasised on matching his efforts with his goal of retiring with a gold medal.
“After the stroke, I knew that I must rebuild myself; otherwise, I would be stuck at home with nothing to do.
“I didn’t want to become that kind of person, so I focused on exercising and staying healthy.”
Throughout the running of his Para Sukma XXI category yesterday, Chong was accompanied by his wife Carol Goh and other family members, whom he hailed as the source of support throughout his journey.
“I plan to also compete in the javelin and discus events, with hopes of bringing more gold medals home to Sarawak,” he said.
