KANOWIT (April 5): Chinese families gathered at the Kanowit Chinese Cemetery on Sunday to pay respects to their ancestors, in observance of the Qing Ming Festival.

Coming in groups and equipped with pails, brushes and cloths, they worked together in cleaning the graves and the surrounding.

They also brought along offerings such as fruits, roasted meats, rice, flowers and joss papers.

Many chose to come early in the morning to avoid the midday heat, but there were some arriving later as they had to wait some of the family members.

Qing Ming, or ‘Tomb-Sweeping Day’, falls on 5 April this year, and is regarded as a significant occasion next after the Lunar New Year.
