KUCHING, June 25:A 16-year-old secondary school student in Kuching was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 45-year-old man after the two had known each other for only a few weeks.
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) chief Milton Foo confirmed that the suspect was arrested on June 15, five days after the victim’s mother lodged a police report on June 10.
The suspect has since been charged in court, with the case scheduled for post trial case management on July 21.
At a press conference today, the victim’s elder brother said the incident occurred on June 9.
“On June 9, my younger sister became the victim of a serious criminal offence committed by a 45-year-old man. Following the incident, my mother lodged a police report on June 10 in the hope that a fair and thorough investigation would be conducted,” he said.
He added that the family initially had concerns about the progress of the investigation but later received assistance from Foo.
“Our primary hope at this stage is that the case will be heard fairly and in accordance with the law, so that my sister receives the protection and justice she rightfully deserves,” he said, while expressing gratitude to Foo for his support and to the police for their professionalism.
Foo reminded that the victim’s identity cannot be disclosed as she is protected under the Child Act 2001.
He described the matter as a serious alleged sexual offence involving a minor and praised the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for their swift action.
“Lawyer Joanne Loy will serve as pro bono watching brief counsel for the victim and her family throughout the court process,” he said.
Foo further urged parents to play an active role in safeguarding their children, particularly teenagers, by monitoring their movements, discouraging late-night outings or overnight stays outside, and avoiding unsupervised contact with strangers.
The case remains ongoing and will proceed with further court hearings. — DayakDaily
