KUCHING, Mar 17: The iconic cat statue in the city centre has been dressed in a green-themed outfit this year in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, continuing a long-standing tradition that reflects Sarawak’s multicultural harmony.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian commended Kuching South City Council (MBKS) for maintaining the practice of decorating the landmark according to major festivals, a gesture that has become a symbol of unity among the State’s diverse communities.

Dr Sim lights up the Ramadan decorative lighting at the Padungan White Cat statue in Kuching on Mar 17, marking the city’s preparations for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“The cat statue, a popular attraction for both tourists and locals, is known for donning different costumes throughout the year.

“For Hari Raya Aidilfitri this year, it features a green ensemble inspired by the traditional Malay songket, marking the festive season,” he said after the switching on of the Ramadan decorative lighting at the iconic cat statue in Padungan today.

The annual initiative which has been carried on by successive mayors and councillors for over two decades is seen as a representation of Sarawak’s values of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.

“The decoration of the cat statue, alongside other multicultural celebrations, such as the recent Chinese New Year, highlights Kuching’s unique social fabric where communities of different backgrounds continue to celebrate each other’s traditions together,” he added. — DayakDaily
