KUCHING (Feb 6): The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) recorded 2,106 fire-related emergency calls last year, a 3.4 per cent reduction from 2,179 calls in 2024, said its director Jamri Masran.

However, he noted that fire incidents remain at an alarming level.

“Statistics on fires also show serious implications for public safety. The increasing trends of losses due to fires annually shows a clear signal that fire prevention efforts need to be empowered.

“As such, emphasising on building safety compliance, improving public awareness, and community preparedness are vital in reducing the impact caused by the losses incurred,” he said during the ‘Komuniti Prihatin, Kediaman Selamat Bersama Bomba Sarawak’ programme at a mall here.

According to Bomba Sarawak, losses due to fires last year rose to RM317.51 million, up from RM199.1 million in 2024.

A total of 320 people were rescued, 10 died, and 32 were injured, while in January this year alone, 12 people were rescued, three died, and one was injured.

In rural areas, 36 longhouse fire cases were recorded between 2024 and 2025, with 20 cases in 2024 and 16 in 2025.

“This situation highlights the urgent need for fire safety education, community empowerment and improved preparedness in interior areas and high-risk zones to prevent recurring tragedies,” Jamri said.

The event also saw six individuals presented with Hero Bomba certificates of appreciation for their bravery in extinguishing a fire at Taman Lee Ling in Matang recently.

The certificates were presented by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, accompanied by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai.
