KOTA KINABALU (March 29): Police have detained five men over an alleged assault on a driver near Jesselton Quay here on Friday.
Acting Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief Superintendent Syed Lot Syed Ab Rahman said the incident occurred at about 1.45pm when the 30-year-old victim, who is a teacher, was confronted by several individuals believed to be employees of a courier company while heading to his vehicle.
“Based on police investigation, the victim was walking to his vehicle after attending a function at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).
“The victim was confronted by several individuals believed to be employees of a courier premises while heading to his vehicle.
“There was verbal provocation before the situation became tense, causing the victim to reverse his vehicle and accidentally hit another vehicle.
“Following that, several individuals chased after the victim before breaking the driver’s side and rear windows of the vehicle,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
Syed Lot said the victim also claimed to have been threatened by the suspects to get out of the vehicle.
“Following a police report lodged by the victim on the same day, police have detained five men to assist in investigations,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
Syed Lot advised the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could interfere with police investigations.
