KUCHING (Jan 3): The flood situation in Sarawak is showing signs of improvement following the closure of two temporary evacuation centres (PPS) today, reducing the total number of active centres statewide to 10 as of 3pm.
The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement said the PPS at Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan was closed at 2pm, while the Malaysian Red Crescent Society hall in Miri ceased operations at 9.42am.
As of now, a total of 1,225 flood victims remain sheltered at PPS across the state.
With the number of evacuees continuing to decline, some displaced residents have begun returning to their homes.
Kuching continues to record the highest number of evacuees, with 1,090 victims from 274 households currently housed at eight PPS.
Meanwhile, in Lawas, 135 victims from 33 households are still taking shelter at two PPS.
