MIRI (March 31): Malaysian vehicle owners are advised to fill before entering Brunei, as its government will require all foreign vehicles to have at least three-quarters of a tank of fuel starting April 1.

Brunei’s Department of Energy (DOE) said the move is aimed at safeguarding the nation’s petroleum supply amid geopolitical developments in the Middle East since late February 2026.

“All foreign-registered vehicles entering Brunei Darussalam will be required to maintain a minimum fuel level of three-quarter tank upon entry.

“Foreign vehicles that do not comply with this requirement will not be allowed to enter Brunei Darussalam,” the statement said.

However, official government vehicles are exempted from this requirement.

Foreign vehicles in Brunei will only be allowed to purchase Shell V-Power Gasoline or Shell V-Power Diesel at participating petrol stations at prevailing market rates.

The rule does not apply to Brunei-registered vehicles returning from Malaysia on their first entry, but it will be enforced for second and subsequent entries within a 24-hour period.

The DOE has also instructed all fuel station operators to follow verification procedures strictly to prevent abuse.

“Actions will be taken for any attempts to use false or modified registration plates. Monitoring and enforcement will be actively carried out by the relevant authorities,” it said.

The department added that these measures are mandatory and form part of Brunei’s efforts to ensure subsidised fuel is used responsibly while protecting national energy security.
