KOTA KINABALU (Jan 22): Former Kapayan assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang has renewed her call to end child marriage in Sabah, urging immediate action on long-delayed legal reforms.

Jannie said a comprehensive 10-year programme to amend Native and Syariah laws was developed during her tenure as Assistant Minister of Law and Native Affairs from 2018 to 2020, but remained unimplemented under the previous state government.

“Amendments to the Native Court Enactment addressing child marriage were approved by the Attorney General’s Chambers for more than five years ago, yet they remain stalled at Cabinet level,” she said in a statement.

She also urged the Minister of Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing to approve the amendments and strengthen training for Native Court personnel.

She stressed the need to continue supporting NGO-led awareness programmes in high-risk rural communities across Sabah.
