KUCHING (Aug 29): The number 88, symbolising prosperity and longevity, perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the evening as Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam celebrated his 88th birthday here last night.
Family, friends, and former colleagues came together to honour the former deputy chief minister for his remarkable life and enduring contributions to Sarawak.
The celebration, infused with heartfelt tributes and nostalgic reflections, highlighted not just Dr Chan’s age but also the strength and vitality that have defined his life.
The venue was meticulously transformed into the ‘Garden of Chan,’ showcasing elements close to his heart, including koi ponds and themed sections dedicated to his cherished memories.
Among the esteemed guests were Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, as well as the Premier’s wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.
Guests were welcomed with a festival drums performance by Chung Hua Middle School (CHMS) No. 4.
In a moving welcoming speech, Dr Chan’s daughter Prof Dr Angelique Chan expressed deep gratitude and admiration for her father.
She recounted his journey from physician in Miri to his impactful role in politics, where his vision transformed Miri from a small town into a city.
She spoke of his commitment to public service, compassion as a doctor, and integrity as a politician.
A video presentation followed, chronicling Dr Chan’s life journey from his early years in Miri, to his decision to pursue medicine after a bout of typhoid fever, to his pivotal role in Sarawak’s IT revolution, and agricultural development.
The evening’s festivities included a cake-cutting ceremony, a special video from Dr Chan’s family, and birthday wishes from his close friends.
There was also a surprise performance by Dr Chan’s wife Datin Patinggi Puan Sri Datuk Wira Lorna Enan Muloon Chan, who serenaded him with their favourite song ‘The Moon Song’.
The evening concluded with a speech from Dr Chan in which he expressed his deep appreciation for the tributes and presence of his friends and family.
“The most important thing in life is to be happy and to have a lot of friends.
“When everybody is happy, the world will be a happier place,” he said.
