KUCHING: The first monthly Free Health Check-Up and Counselling Programme was successfully held this morning at the Kuching Natural Farmers Market, marking the launch of a regular community health initiative scheduled to take place on the first Saturday of every month at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) carpark.
Jointly organised by MBKS, Diabetes Malaysia (Sarawak Branch), the Lions Club of Kuching North, Lions Club of Kuching Lavender, and the Kuching Natural Farmers Market, the programme offered free diabetes and blood pressure screenings alongside complimentary health counselling.
The initiative aims to promote early detection of non-communicable diseases and encourage healthier lifestyles among the community.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who welcomed the initiative, said it forms part of the council’s ongoing age-friendly city initiative focused on improving accessibility to preventive healthcare services.
“This morning’s programme is a meaningful step towards bringing essential health services closer to the community. It reflects our commitment to ensuring that our residents, especially senior citizens, have access to preventive healthcare and can age actively and healthily,” he said in a statement today.
He also expressed appreciation to the organising partners for their continued contribution to public health awareness and outreach.
“I would like to commend Diabetes Malaysia and the Lions Clubs for their continued efforts in promoting public health. Their commitment plays a vital role in encouraging early detection and empowering the community to take charge of their health,” he added.
Held from 7am to 10am, the inaugural session received an encouraging response, with 68 senior citizens undergoing screenings and receiving on-site consultations and professional advice on managing their health.
Organisers have encouraged members of the public to take part in future sessions, which will continue to be held monthly.
“Together, we build a healthier, more age-friendly Kuching South,” Wee said. — DayakDaily
