KUCHING, June 12: Sports enthusiasts in Kuching can now enjoy enhanced facilities following the facelift of the multi-purpose court at Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Sports Village, which now features three badminton courts, two pickleball courts, and one netball court.
According to MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, sports facilities are more than just places for exercise, as they also serve as community spaces where residents can gather, build friendships, and foster a stronger sense of belonging.
“Investing in public sports infrastructure is an investment in the well-being of our community,” he said during the launching ceremony of the newly repainted court at MBKS Sport Village here today.
Wee said the project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 on Good Health and Well-Being by encouraging people of all ages to participate in physical and recreational activities.
He added that the upgraded facility also supports MBKS’ Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI), which aims to provide children and young people with safe, accessible, and inclusive spaces for play, learning, and social interaction.
According to him, facilities such as the multi-purpose court help children build confidence, develop teamwork skills, and adopt healthy habits from a young age.
Recognising the growing popularity of pickleball, MBKS introduced two dedicated courts for the sport, which is known for being affordable, simple, and accessible to players of all ages and fitness levels.

He also expressed appreciation to all parties involved in the project, saying their support had contributed towards creating a more vibrant, active, and healthy community.
Wee said the facility is open for public rental from 9am to 10pm for a fee, with bookings available at Counter 7 in the MBKS headquarters lobby during office hours.
In addition, he added that MBKS is working towards introducing an online booking platform to make the reservation process easier and more accessible for the public.
As the facility is now open for public use, Wee urged residents to make full use of the courts and help maintain them by refraining from vandalism. — DayakDaily
