KUCHING (May 8): Delegates from the Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MGCC) have expressed strong interest in potential collaboration and investment opportunities in Sarawak’s expanding transport and logistics sectors.
According to a statement, the commitment was underscored during a courtesy call and roundtable discussion with Sarawak Minister for Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, at Baitulmakmur Building yesterday (May 7).
The delegation was led by Dato’ Steven Aroki, Member of the Board of Directors of MGCC, who was in Sarawak in conjunction with the 6th German-Malaysian Business Forum (GMBF) recently.
During the engagement, both sides held in-depth discussions on the development of Sarawak’s transportation ecosystem, covering key areas such as public transport, aviation connectivity, logistics, port development, sustainable mobility, and green transportation initiatives.
They also exchanged views on the modernisation of heavy transport vehicles and future trends in the logistics and commercial transportation sector, reflecting shared interest in innovation-driven and environmentally sustainable solutions.
Lee highlighted Sarawak’s long-term vision to transform its transport landscape in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which places strong emphasis on sustainable development and technology-driven mobility systems.
Among the flagship initiatives presented was the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS), including the development of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system powered by hydrogen technology. The system positions Sarawak as a regional pioneer in green public transportation.
He added that the initiative will be complemented by a fleet of 55 hydrogen-powered feeder buses, reinforcing the state’s commitment to low-carbon and environmentally friendly public mobility.
The Minister also briefed the delegation on ongoing efforts to enhance air connectivity and regional mobility through AirBorneo, alongside infrastructure upgrades at airports, ports, and lorry terminals aimed at strengthening trade, tourism, and investment growth.
Lee welcomed closer engagement with German industries, particularly in smart mobility, clean energy transport solutions, logistics innovation, industrial supply chains, and infrastructure development.
He expressed hope that the discussions would pave the way for stronger bilateral cooperation and mutually beneficial partnerships between Sarawak and Germany in advancing a modern and sustainable transport sector. — DayakDaily
