The government will begin limiting diesel purchases in Sabah and Sarawak from April 1 following concerns over stockpiling and smuggling, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
In a special televised address, he said limits would be set at 50 litres per purchase for light vehicles, 100 litres for public transport and goods vehicles under three tonnes, and 150 litres for vehicles above three tonnes.
“This is to ensure that available supply can be distributed fairly and sufficiently to everyone,” he said.
Anwar, who is also finance minister, said Sabah and Sarawak will continue to receive subsidised diesel at RM2.15 per litre despite rising prices, citing the states’ logistical and geographical challenges.
“As the price difference widens, we must be vigilant, take tighter measures and have more effective enforcement.
“I ask the public to understand that these measures are necessary to protect the public interest. They will not be easy and may affect some people. I seek your understanding and cooperation so that we can prevent leakages,” he said.
In his speech, Anwar also said the 300-litre monthly quota for subsidised RON95 petrol under the BUDI95 programme has been reduced to 200 litres as an interim measure to address the impact of the Middle East conflict.
The new quota for the subsidised fuel, priced at RM1.99 per litre, is expected to take effect from next month.
He emphasised that the measure is temporary, pending a recovery in oil prices, supply conditions, and the global economy.
