KUCHING, March 14: The cost of performing Hajj this year may rise due to higher fuel and logistics costs stemming from global conflicts, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof.
He said geopolitical tensions could drive up oil prices, insurance rates, and transportation costs worldwide, which may in turn affect airfares and other travel-related expenses.
“The increase in Hajj travel costs is a possibility, but we cannot state it definitely yet because we need to monitor how the situation develops,” he told reporters when met after Sumbangsih Santunan Kasih Seindah Syawal Programme at Samariang Service Centre in Petra Jaya today.
Fadillah further said Tabung Haji is currently in discussions with several airlines, including those from Saudi Arabia, to ensure that flight costs for Malaysian pilgrims are not significantly affected.
“I was informed that Tabung Haji has already begun negotiations with airlines to ensure that flight costs, in particular, will not be adversely affected.
“Any decision will be announced later by Tabung Haji or the relevant religious authorities,” he added.
Fadillah, who is also Petra Jaya MP, stated that the government is also keeping a close watch on developments in the Middle East and is hopeful that diplomatic efforts, including mediation by Malaysia, could help ease tensions.
“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been contacted by leaders in the Gulf region to possibly act as a mediator to resolve the conflict.
“We are optimistic that this will help reopen the Strait of Hormuz for trade and transportation,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
