BAU (April 1): Bau, which celebrates its 206th anniversary this year, has a unique historical background and strong development prospects, said Deputy Minister of Transport (Riverine and Marine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep.
Launching the Bau District Chinese Community Leaders Association at the Civic Centre here last night, he said the district’s legacy as a gold-mining town remains a key part of its identity and carries significant tourism potential.
“Bau’s history is not only a source of pride for the local community, but also an asset that can be further developed to attract more visitors,” he said.
Henry, who is also Tasik Biru assemblyman, highlighted Bau’s proximity to the Sarawak–Kalimantan border, positioning it as a promising hub for economic activities, trade and tourism.
He said these growing economic prospects are in line with the Sarawak Maju Makmur 2030 vision and the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which emphasise inclusive economic growth and sustainable community development.
In this context, he stressed that community-based organisations such as the newly established Bau District Chinese Community Leaders Association play an important role in supporting development efforts and strengthening unity.
According to him, the association could also facilitate collective participation in development projects such as the Tasik Biru Resort City.
“Through this association, the community can have a stronger voice and play a more active role in local development alongside other races,” he said.
Meanwhile, the association’s chairman Kapitan Chong Chun Min said Bau has progressed tremendously under Henry’s leadership as Tasik Biru assemblyman over the past nine years.
He described Henry is a visionary, hardworking and smart leader who has initiated many development projects to uplift Bau.
“Even those living outside Bau are full of praise for Henry’s leadership and Bau’s progress. Come election time, let’s make sure he wins again and serve us for another five years,” he added.
