Hibiscus Petroleum in a bourse filing on Monday said the solar farm is expected to deliver its first power by the end of the year.
BRUNEI DARUSSALAM (Feb 9): Hibiscus Petroleum Bhd has begun construction of a 12-megawatt peak (MWp) ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) farm at Sungai Liang Industrial Park (SPARK), Brunei Darussalam.
The project, which occupies a 26-acre site, was marked by a groundbreaking ceremony officiated by the Deputy Minister (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office of Brunei Darussalam Dato Seri Paduka Awang Mohamad Azmi Mohd Hanifah.
Hibiscus Petroleum in a bourse filing on Monday said the solar farm is expected to deliver its first power by the end of the year.
The renewable electricity generated will be supplied exclusively to the group’s Low-Pressure Compressor (LPC) facility at the Onshore Processing Plant (OPP), which will be the project’s sole off-taker.
Upon completion, the facility is expected to generate stable cash flows, supporting predictable long-term returns while advancing the group’s expansion into energy transition activities.
The project is also expected to reduce operational emissions and improve the reliability and sustainability of energy supply to the plant.
The development supports Brunei Darussalam’s national target of raising renewable energy to at least 30 per cent of total installed capacity by 2035.
It also aligns with ongoing government efforts to expand renewable energy deployment, improve energy efficiency and promote energy conservation.
Awang Mohamad Azmi said the solar initiative demonstrates Hibiscus Petroleum’s commitment to integrating renewable energy into its operations, reflecting progress within Brunei’s oil and gas sector.
He noted that such efforts enhance efficiency, strengthen competitiveness and support long-term industry resilience.
He added that improving energy demand efficiency including reducing structural energy waste through efficient buildings, appliances, industrial processes and smarter consumption helps lower system costs and peak demand.
“Brunei Darussalam continues to advance demand-side efficiency through measures such as the Energy Efficiency Standards and Labelling Act, alongside improvements in generation efficiency and system optimisation.
“Together, these actions strengthen energy security while reducing emissions intensity,” he said.
He added that continued commitment from government, industry and consumers are key to help embed energy efficiency into investment decisions, operational practices and daily consumption habits.
Meanwhile, Hibiscus Petroleum managing director Dato Dr Kenneth Pereira said the project marks progress in building a resilient and future-ready energy portfolio.
“This initiative supports our 2030 mission to diversify into energy transition projects by developing power generation assets that deliver stable cash flows and predictable long-term returns, while maintaining disciplined capital allocation,” he said.
He also described Brunei as a key growth hub for the group, noting that the solar farm complements its existing operations in the country and deepens its contribution to the local energy ecosystem.
He added that the project provides a foundation for future growth, including potential expansion in power generation activities.
