KOTA KINABALU (Feb 12): Boxing in Sabah has received a boost with the unveiling of an Olympic-standard boxing ring, marking a milestone for the sport in the state.
Sabah Boxing Association president Datuk Orlando Harumal described the occasion as a significant turning point, saying it reflects the commitment shown at the highest level of the sport’s leadership.
“Today is a historic day for Sabah boxing, as we are led by a president at national-level who is competent and attentive in carrying out his duties,” Orlando said referring to Malaysian Boxing Federation (MBF) president Datuk Mohamad Iruan Zulkefli.
“Since I became involved in the world of boxing, this was the first time I have met a president who not only makes promises but fulfils them with concrete action,” he added.
Orlando was speaking at the handing over and unveiling ceremony of the boxing ring, which Iruan officiated, at the Tuaran basketball hall near here recently.
“On this historic day, Datuk Iruan has fulfilled his promise with the unveiling of an Olympic-standard boxing ring.
“He has greatly assisted efforts to elevate the standard of boxing in Sabah,” added Orlando in a brief speech shared via WhatsApp on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, four bouts featuring boxing athletes from Tuaran were held in conjunction with the ceremony.
The boxing ring, which the MBF contributed to Sabah boxing, is then kept at the state association secretary office-cum-store in Kampung Raganan, Tuaran.
