The Kelantan government hopes the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor will proceed as planned, even if on a smaller scale, a state executive councillor said today.
Youth, sports, non-governmental organisations and community unity committee chairman Zamakhshari Muhamad said postponing the games could have a direct impact on the state athletes’ performance and morale.
He said the state government had been preparing for nearly two years since Sukma 2024 in Sarawak, with significant commitments in terms of time, effort and finances.
“However, we respect the views of the sultan of Selangor,” Bernama reported him as saying after the Kelantan assembly sitting today.
Zamakhshari said the Sukma supreme committee meeting on April 9 also discussed a proposal for the games to proceed on a scaled-down basis.
On Monday, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said the games scheduled from Aug 15 to 24 should be postponed until the global energy crisis is resolved and the Shah Alam Stadium redevelopment is completed.
Youth and sports minister Dr Taufiq Johari said his ministry would seek the Selangor government’s views on postponing the games, and that a special Sukma supreme committee meeting would be held to discuss the matter.
