KUCHING (March 13): Hope Place Kuching is reaching out to a 59-year-old mentally-challenged man living alone at Sungai Moyan here, by providing regular food aid and supplying a new bed and pillow to improve his living conditions.
During a visit, Chin Kuek Chian shared that his first sign of mental disability was detected at the age of 12.
“He managed to complete Primary 6 but did not continue pursuing secondary level education,” Hope Place said in a statement.
The charity said Chin is able to respond to questions coherently, though he often turns to his sister Mei for matters like medication or finances.
“Chin frequently experiences emotional outburst and mood swings,” it added.
Hope Place said Chin’s sisters previously lived with him but moved out due to his unpredictable behaviour. They now live nearby and continue to monitor him.
“Chin used to work as a construction labourer but struggled to maintain employment due to difficulty socialising and occasional physical reactions,” it said.
“Despite his challenges, Chin is independent. He cooks and walks to nearby shops for supplies or a haircut. His sisters cook for him once a day.”
Hope Place added that Chin lives in his late parents’ dilapidated single-storey wooden house, which has a dirt floor, a partially collapsed roof, and a damaged kitchen wall.
He receives RM350 monthly from the state Social Welfare Department.
Hope Place welcomes donations and issues receipts upon request. Contributions can be made to its Maybank account 511289001160 or via the S Pay Global QR code on its Facebook page.
