BINTULU (Oct 23): The Malaysian Scouts Association Bintulu District hosted the World Jota-Joti (Jamboree on the Air, Jamboree on the Internet) Scout Camp, which took place at SK Kidurong II here last weekend.
The programme gathered nearly 300 pupils from seven primary schools, namely SK Kidurong II, SK Tanjung Batu, SK Sri Simalajau, SK Kidurong, SK Asyakirin, SK Pandan, and SK Sebauh; as well as secondary school students from SMK Kemena, SMK Bandar, SMK Bintulu, SMK Kidurong, and Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) Bintulu.
The camp was conducted by Jota-Joti 9M8SJT Bintulu coordinator Aaron Martin Robin with Mcginsen Nyalang Sengalang as the camp commandant.
It featured a variety of activities such as amateur radio communication, led by Alvin Johnson and assisted by Jachary Cedrick Junior Jackaria Sandom; secret scout signals by Marus Kamaruddin and Gerald Gaun Billy; semaphore flag signals managed by Abdul Ahmad Ghulwani Abdul Rahim and Augustine Mat Anthony Juat; a session on Morse code facilitated by Brian Jatu and Muhammad Aiman Fazley Azrin; and Joti overseen by Sylvia Ho Kim Choo.
Additionally, outstanding participants from both primary and secondary school categories at the camp were honoured.
In the primary school category, Darren Mulin from SK Sri Simalajau and Naomi Priyanka Ganit Erudayam from SK Kidurong II were named the ‘Best Boy’ and ‘Best Girl’ participants.
Fabien Januarius Esop Nyaring from SMK Bandar and Florence Melisa Sartu Empai from SMK Kemena were honoured as the best male and female participants in the secondary school category.
The Malaysian Scouts Association Sarawak also assigned the call sign ‘9M8SJT’ to the Bintulu Station for this year.
Bintulu District Education Office (Student Development Sector) Co-curriculum Unit assistant officer Muhamad Farid Che Hassan officially closed the camp on Sunday.
Among those present were Bintulu District Scouts Commissioner and Station 9M4SJT chief Alvin Johnson and SK Kidurong II acting principal Betty Kumari Basir.
