It is proven that reading, especially doing it aloud, plays an important role in a child’s development.

KUCHING (April 5): A pilot reading session carried out by HWPL Malaysia at The Salvation Army Kuching recently marked a meaningful step in supporting children’s literacy development.

Conducted in small groups, the programme involved tutors guiding the children through reading activities meant to enhance their command in vocabulary and pronunciation, as well as their confidence.

“Even within this initial session, noticeable improvements were observed as the children became more comfortable and expressive in reading aloud – demonstrating the value of consistent guidance in early learning,” said HWPL Malaysia in a statement.

The movement added that following this positive start, the programme would be expanded to reach more communities, providing children with continued access to structured reading support.

“Beyond literacy, this initiative also aims to foster unity by creating inclusive spaces where children from different backgrounds can learn and grow together,” it added.

According to HWPL Malaysia, the programme also promotes the appreciation and preservation of local heritage.

“Writers, educators, and community members, especially those producing works in indigenous and local languages such as Bidayuh and Iban, are encouraged to share their stories with these young readers.

“By introducing children to books in their mother tongue, the initiative supports both learning and the preservation of cultural identity,” it pointed out.

Adding on, HWPL Malaysia said to further grow the impact from this reading programme, it was welcoming collaboration with educational institutions, community organisations, authors, cultural groups and also those sharing a common vision of promoting literacy and cultural heritage.

“Through such partnerships, the programme aims to reach more children and create meaningful learning opportunities across communities.

“Moreover, this initiative supports Malaysia’s National Reading Decade 2021-2030 led by the Ministry of Education, and aligns with the national efforts of building a strong reading culture and strengthening social unity.

“As highlighted by Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, reading plays a key role in nation-building, as it strengthens national unity through the sharing of knowledge, values, and understanding among communities,” it elaborated.

It is proven that reading, especially doing it aloud, plays an important role in a child’s development.

It helps improve vocabulary and pronunciation, while building their confidence in communication.

With proper guidance, children are better equipped to express themselves, engage with others, and grow into confident individuals within their communities.
